Slowing Down in the Busiest City in the World

New York is the city that never sleeps. The capital of hustle culture. The place where everyone is busy- always. It’s exciting, it’s inspiring, it’s like a constant adrenaline rush. But one thing it isn’t? Sustainable. I would love to meet the person who can function at this speed at all times, and never break. I just simply don’t believe they exist.
Nightlife is great in New York- always exciting, never fails to surprise you. But for my roomies and I, it isn’t an every weekend activity. Why? Because a lot of times, we’re exhausted (and also because going out is terribly expensive..). So, often we use our Friday and Saturday nights to slow down and relax. We have found plenty of ways to do so. We love our movie nights. We had a month dedicated to the Twilight movies, and another period of time we binged the Fast & Furious series (and my heart BROKE). We love to have our craft nights, and sit at the table listening to Taylor Swift, scrapbooking, drawing, whatever our hearts desire. We have our little wine nights here and there, and we love to throw in the card game Let’s Get Deep, just to giggle and get to know each other even better. We even had our era of The Bachelor (we were rooting for Maria, but we do love Kelsey). One thing our girl's nights always have? Pizza from our very favorite pizza place about 2 blocks up from us.
We’ve found a million ways to do it, but one thing all of these nights have had in common for us is rest. Rest, prioritizing each other (cause we are so in love), and relaxation. Some nights we do stay up later than ideal, but we always wake up the next morning (occasionally afternoon) feeling refreshed. Quite a different morning experience than the days after the nights spent at clubs or bars…
New York City, in all of its glory and hustle and fast-paced moving, is truly amazing. I wouldn’t trade my opportunity to live here for anything. I’ve dreamt of this life for so long, and maybe those dreams didn’t include weekends dedicated to a Twilight binge or card games until early hours of the morning, but they’re just something I didn’t know I needed. I’m forever grateful for everything I get to do in this city, everything I get to experience. But I’m especially grateful for this time I get to rest, relax, and bond with my roomie girls I love so much. Because this way of life, for us, is sustainable. I feel like we could do it forever, and be happy all the while. So what I’ve learned from this? College is all about figuring everything out, we know that. But maybe something to add is figuring out how much time you need to rest, and finding ways to do that that you enjoy. Whether those nights are spent alone, with some friends, or your roomie girls- if you got as lucky as I did! These nights have turned into something I look forward to, the way I used to look forward to going out 4 nights of the week! I don’t think I need to clarify which way of life is better for my mental…
Until next time!
