Social media is such a game changer in the world of fashion, that’s a given. But lately, I’ve been thinking about how social media has changed fashion for me, personally. Not only has it served as a limitless source of knowledge to me, teaching me more and more about the world of fashion every day, but it’s done so much more. I’ve been thinking about how it’s changed my perception of what fashion is, how it’s helped me shape my own identity through fashion, all of the things.
To begin with, social media is what inspired me to really get into fashion. Without it, I don’t know that I ever would have become as passionate about fashion as I am. I just wouldn’t have been exposed to it as much. When I first started to become interested in fashion, obviously the first place I turned was social media. Slowly, I started seeing more fashion-based content showing up on my For You Page on Tik Tok. I was seeing more outfit videos, fashion school “day in my life” videos, or short clips from runway shows. The more I saw, the more I fell in love, and the more I started to seek out these kinds of posts. Social media is a bottomless well of fashion-related content, and I dove right in. As I started to learn, I only became more and more interested and wanted to continue learning more. Without social media though, a lot of the information I was learning from wouldn’t have been presented to me in such a convenient and interesting way, and I doubt I would have become as interested as quickly and as passionately as I did.
Before exploring the world of fashion on social media, to me, fashion was a much simpler word, a much simpler concept. The word “fashion” was synonymous with “style” or even “clothes” to me. By exploring so many different facets of it through social media, however, it came to mean so much more. Through Instagram posts and Tik Tok videos, I became familiar with specific designers and their own personal styles. I began to see all different kinds of styles and aesthetics, yet how they were all fashionable in their own ways. I was exposed to different ways in which fashion inspired art, art inspired fashion, and how in some ways, fashion was art. “Fashion” became this indefinable word to me, and as that happened, I became interested in finding my own ways to express what it was to me.
Staying creatively motivated in your own fashion can become difficult after some time has passed, and the newness has worn off. The pieces in your wardrobe may feel dated, occasionally you may feel like you’ve run out of ways to style them. But in my own experience, social media keeps that creative motivation alive, and it keeps the newness and excitement of fashion styling alive. Several different platforms inspire me in my own fashion styling, but Pinterest has been the biggest inspiration to me. Being able to see so many different ideas and ways of styling that never would have occurred to me on my own fuels my creativity like nothing else. Ever since I became the fashion fanatic that I am, I’ve always kept one Pinterest board dedicated to outfits I like and would like to recreate in my own way, as well as interesting styling techniques that I haven’t seen or tried before. Then, when I get up in the morning and feel uninspired, I open that Pinterest board. Scrolling through those pins sparks something in me, and suddenly I’ve created a new outfit out of the same wardrobe I’ve been working with for months.
Without social media, I would not have the same fashion identity that I do, nor would it be as strong as it is. There is something to be said for having several different platforms to gather inspiration for my own fashion. I may have the same pieces in my wardrobe as another girl, but she may style them totally different than I do- and social media allows me to view her styles, as well as thousands of others’ styles- and save what I like to recreate on my own later, and not give another thought to those that I don’t. Taking inspiration from others online and filtering through so much content from other people allows me to create a style that’s completely different from one single other person’s. At the end of it all, I have a style, or an aesthetic, that’s completely my own- simply from combining my own ideas with those of other people I’ve been able to access through social media. Eventually, experimentation with clothing has become second nature to me, and I no longer have to reference social media so much to create a new outfit that I absolutely love. I’ve found my style. Having a platform to share my favorite outfits I’ve created is just another aspect of social media that has strengthened my fashion identity. Similar to the pinterest board I keep of other people’s styles and outfits that I love, my Instagram page is like my own. It’s a consolidated place of all of my favorite outfits of my own, that I hope can in turn inspire other people to experiment with their clothing and find their own personal sense of style.
All of this being said, I hope to incorporate many of these things into my blog to nurture a similar journey through all things fashion to those of you reading. I aim to instill a love for fashion in you, if you’re interested, similar to the love I hold for it in myself. I would love for this blog to be an asset to you in some way, in your own fashion explorations. Maybe it’s teaching you things you didn’t know, creating a new perception of the word in your mind, inspiring you to stay creative and experimental, or helping you to find and build your own fashion identity. If nothing else, I’m here to simply serve as a window into the world of fashion through someone else’s eyes. In the life of this blog, I hope to accomplish at least one of those things for those of you excited about fashion, and everything that it is. Thank you for reading, and as always, I’d love to hear any thoughts or suggestions from you!
Until next time,
